why digital cameras? - A Personal history

Photography has been a huge passion of mine for many years. Like most people (my age and older, at least), I started out with a film camera. I went through several film cameras in my early years, and in 1999 or 2000 I bought my first digital camera. It was the Fujifilm MX-1200, a 1.3 megapixel fixed lens camera. This camera sold for $299 (boy have prices dropped since then!) and was one of the best sub-$300 digital cameras on the market at the time. This little monster had me completely sold. Sure, it was no high end camera, but I quickly realized that I wouldn't be going back to film any time soon.

In 2003, I decided that my little 1.3 megapixel camera just wasn't cutting it anymore. Prices had dropped, so I decided it was time to get something better. After months of research and testing different cameras, I finally decided on the Minolta DiMAGE Z1, a 3.2 megapixel 10x zoom camera that originally retailed for $399. Since I don't print many of my photographs, I opted for the long zoom over an extra megapixel (for the price). I use the Z1 for all of my photography now, and it has proven to be a great little camera. Again, it's no high end camera, but it was a hell of a good deal for the price.

I hope be able to dive into the world of digital SLRs soon. It's something I've wanted to do for quite some time, but I've never been able to afford it. I still can't afford it, but I'm putting every extra penny I have into my camera fund so that hopefully some day in the not-too-distant future I'll be able to afford the next camera on my list - the Canon EOS 20D.. either that or possibly the Canon EOS 350D (Digital Rebel XT) if I can make myself realize that spending $1600 on a camera is insane (because spending $1000 isn't, right?).

Between the two that I've owned and the hundreds I've drooled over, digital cameras have brought my passion for photography (and cameras) to a whole new level. I can honestly say that my life would not be the same without them because without them, photography wouldn't be such a huge part of my life.
